Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
For over 13
years, the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestras (EPYO — grades 9–12
and EPYO II — grades 6–9) have provided outstanding educational and
performing opportunities to students who demonstrate the musicianship
necessary to perform in a pre-professional orchestra setting. With your
financial support, the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestras can
continue offering excellence in programming at an affordable cost.
Youth Concerts
Over 9,000
students from schools throughout the Tri-State descend upon the Victory
Theatre each March to attend the annual Youth Concerts, conducted by
Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra Music Director, Alfred Savia. These
educational concerts are designed to introduce third, fourth, and fifth
grade students to the world of orchestral music. Participating schools
receive a teacher's guide and compact disc to aid in preparing the
students.
In-School Concerts
Principal
players of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, including the Eykamp
String Quartet and the Harlaxton Woodwind Quintet, present ensemble
performances for K-12 students in Evansville and the surrounding region.
Lollipop Concerts
Each year, an ensemble of principal musicians
from the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra presents ten 45-minute "informances"
to approximately 1,300 pre-school children, introducing them to the wonders of
orchestral music.
Instrument Petting Zoo
The Instrument Petting Zoo offers children a
hands-on opportunity to explore the instruments of the orchestra at various
special events throughout the community.
Young Artist Competition
The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra's Young
Artist Competition draws talented young instrumentalists in grades 6-12 from
the tri-state area to compete for cash prizes and performance opportunities.
Symphony of Color
The Symphony of Color Art Contest, presented in
cooperation with the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science, invites
students in grades 1-5 to create art inspired by great works of music.
After-School Instrumental Music Program
In
collaboration with the Carver Community Organization, orchestra musicians give
free violin
lessons to children in grades K-5.
Concert Conversations
To promote a more enjoyable and enriching
concert experience, Music Director Alfred Savia, often joined by guest artists
and speakers, hosts "Concert Conversations" before Classics concerts. These
informal discussions offer audience members an opportunity to gain insight into
the repertoire, composers and other interesting facets of the evening's
Classics program.
