It seems that the name “Schuster” and music in the city of Evansville have been synonymous for as long as most can remember – a relationship that Sheryl is very proud to continue.
Sheryl is the daughter of Kurt and Ethel Schuster of Evansville. Her father is responsible for many milestones in music education here is Evansville, including the founding of the Evansville All-City Honors Orchestra program. The Schuster name also plays an important role in the history of the Philharmonic. Kurt Schuster has held the titles of Principal Viola and Assistant Conductor with the orchestra. When asked if these are tough shoes to walk in, Sheryl responds with a resounding “YES! – but what an environment to be raised in. I can’t thank my parents enough for the music education I received at home. I’ll try and make you proud, Dad.”
Ms. Schuster comes from a diverse musical background as an orchestral musician, pedagogue, conductor, and chamber musician. Her teaching experience includes all levels of education – primary, secondary, collegiate, and continuing education. She has taught orchestra for the past 28 years throughout Indiana and Kentucky. She is currently String Specialist with the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and maintains a large private studio of 60+ violin and viola students. She has served for the past three years as first violin section coach for the Indiana All-State Orchestra.
Ms. Schuster has been a member of the Evansville Philharmonic’s first violin section for the past twelve years (as well as two years in high school). She is the first violinist and founding member of the River’s Bend Chamber Players, and the former Principal Second Violin and Assistant Concertmaster of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.
Recently, Sheryl donned one more educational "hat." In February, she assumed the position of Alice May Director of Education and Community Programs with the Philharmonic.
Ms. Schuster holds degrees from Ball State University in music education and is a member of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA), National School Orchestra Association (NSOA), and the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA). She serves actively as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the state and is heavily involved in community music-making.
