Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra
Tochigi City Wind Orchestra
The Tochigi City Wind Orchestra was founded in 1972 for the purpose of improving Tochigi City's music culture. Its development was encouraged by Tochigi's Junior Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Tochigi's neighboring communities.
The activities of TCWO include regularly scheduled concerts twice a year and various other events at the request of the Tochigi City government, neighboring communities and a variety of corporations in the region. TCWO also regularly visits local schools to instruct students in brass band instruments in elementary and junior high schools with the hope of encouraging the next generation.
In 2003, Mr. Yanami Sakahashi, a flutist with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, was installed as the permanent conductor and musical director of TCWO. Since then, TCWO has extended its performance range to include Operas and Ballets in its repertoire. This addition has been very well received and is quite popular with the citizens of Tochigi City.
In 2005, TCWO made its first overseas concert in Kinka, which is Tochigi City's sister-city in China. TCWO performed two very successful concerts to sold out audiences.
In April 2006, with the hope of developing "A Circle of Music", it established a sister relationship between Iruma City Wind Orchestra (Saitama prefecture) and Wakasa Wind Ensemble (Fukui prefecture). This sister relationship among Wind Orchestra's was the first of its kind in Japan at that time.
The Tochigi City Wind Orchestra consists of 59 musicians, 10 directors and 5 advisors. This year marks the 60th anniversary for their spring concert series. They are honored to have the opportunity to play this year in Evansville. The orchestra members have been carefully preparing for a successful concert. The expectation is that this one event will no doubt take TCWO members to another level in their performances.
All the members are very excited about meeting the citizens of Evansville and performing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of our sister-city relationship.
