EVANSVILLE - The Evansville Philharmonic will salute the nation on stage and service members in the audience this weekend with a patriot Pops concert billed as a Star-Spangled Spectacular.
Alfred Savia will lead the Philharmonic Orchestra, chorus and guest artists in The Victory on Saturday and Sunday in an all-American concert including anthems, marches and musical salutes.
The orchestra has issued all active-duty military members a weekend pass for free seats to either concert. An advance call to the box office at (812) 425-5050 will get anyone on active duty in any of the military services a free reservation to one of the concerts.
Steven Mead to play the euphonium.
The program, the final Pops concert of the season, will feature euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead in an array of music, including versions of "Yankee Doodle," "America" and "The Star-Spangled Banner." Mead is a British musician who has performed around the world as a soloist and teacher, championing music for the big brass instrument resembling a baritone horn.
Evansville native Joan Moore-Mobley will sing the solo in "God Bless America," and the Philharmonic Chorus will be featured in "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Other works on the program will include music by George M. Cohan, George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, Irving Berlin, Meredith Willson and John Philip Sousa.
The orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in The Victory. Tickets are $15 to $61 for adults, $5 to $61 for those 12 and younger, $10.50 at the door for students (hour before concert).
