EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC 52nd ANNUAL YOUNG ARTIST
COMPETITION SELECTS WINNERS
Evansville, Indiana – On Sunday, January
27, 2008, a panel of judges appointed by the Evansville Philharmonic selected winners for the orchestra’s 52nd
Annual Young Artist Competition held at
the Victory Theatre in downtown Evansville.
Talented instrumental musicians (violin,
string bass, piano, flute, French horn, and oboe) from the Tri-State area in
grades 6-12 competed for cash prizes and performance opportunities with the
Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. The
top three prizes were awarded to the following:
The
GRAND PRIZE was awarded to Alec
Sievern of Evansville, Indiana. Young Alec’s remarkable performance of the third movement
(Presto) of Saint-Saen’s Concerto No. 2 in G minor for piano won him a
$1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to perform with the Evansville
Philharmonic Orchestra. Alec Sievern is the
son of Luann and Bill Sievern and is a seventh grader at St. Benedict Cathedral School in Evansville,
IN.
The
second place prize, or CONDUCTOR’S AWARD,
went to violinist Lauren Wright, also of Evansville,
IN. Ms. Wright’s brilliant performance of Introduction and
Rondo Capriccioso, also by Camille Saint-Saens, won her a $600 cash prize and a
performance with the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra on their upcoming
Spring Concert on Saturday, May 10th. Lauren is the daughter of Laurie and Dale
Wright and is a junior at North High School in Evansville,
IN.
The
third place prize, or ORCHESTRA AWARD,
went to French hornist Rachel Bennett of Evansville,
IN. Rachel performed the first movement of the Concerto
No. 4 in E-flat Major by W.A. Mozart.
Her lyrical rendition won her a $300 cash prize. Rachel is the daughter of Bob and Carolyn
Bennett and is a senior at F. J.
Reitz High
School in Evansville,
IN.
HONORABLE
MENTIONS include oboist John Becker of Evansville,
IN, his sister Darcie Becker on French horn,
and flutist Charlotte Roth of Chandler, IN.
John and Darcie Becker are both seventh graders at Trinity Lutheran
School in Evansville, IN. Ms.
Roth is a sophomore at Signature School in Evansville,
IN.
The
Young Artist Competition is designed to promote, encourage, and nurture
exceptional young talent. The Young
Artists Competition is funded in part by the Musicians Club of
Evansville/Margaret B. & Leo E. Heim Memorial Scholarship Fund.
