EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra announced the creation of a new scholarship fund during its Opening Night Gala on Saturday, September 15, 2007.  The Philharmonic held a live auction and raised $5,800 for tuition assistance for its Youth Orchestra students. “Often we see musically talented students who would love to join the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, but tuition is simply out of reach”, says Sheryl Schuster, Director of Education for the Philharmonic. “This scholarship fund will offer much-needed financial assistance to these talented young musicians.”  Crystal Phillips, Development Director for the Philharmonic adds, “Thanks to the generosity of our Gala attendees, we will be able to assist 25-30 students who might not have even considered auditioning for the Youth Orchestras for financial reasons.”

The Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestras offer performance opportunities for musically talented high school and middle school students in the Tri-State area.  In existence since 1993, the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Program consists of a high school orchestra (EPYO), which is reserved for outstanding players in grades 9-12 who demonstrate the musicianship necessary to perform in a pre-professional orchestra setting, and an intermediate level orchestra (EPYO II), typically consisting of middle and high school students in grades 6-9.  The goals of the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra are:

  • To provide opportunities for public and private school students in the Tri-State area to play orchestra music;
  • To educate students to pursue high standards in the performance of this music, and to cultivate young talent, that these students may be enriched as both performers and listeners;
  • To assist, stimulate and encourage community outreach, sparking interest in orchestral music throughout the Tri-State area and beyond.

For more information, please contact Sheryl Schuster, Director of Education and Community Programs, at the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, 812-425-5050.
