ARTS BEAT: Back in the black
Roger McBain
The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra's board of directors got good news and more good news at its annual meeting last week, reports Glenn Roberts, the organization's executive director.
For the first time in eight years, the Philharmonic has met its budget
"without extraordinary gifts or bequests," says Roberts, "and we're
projecting a surplus."
The black "income" figures for the fiscal year ending Saturday look to
come out about $5,000 ahead of the red "expense" total for the $1.9
million budget, he says.
That comes after the philharmonic restored $512,000 to its endowment funds, now at $2.8 million, according to Roberts.
Roberts credits it all to ongoing, concerted efforts by the board of
directors and management to hit fund-raising and ticket sales goals and
to control expenses.
Some of those expense controls have included reduction of the
"Classics" season from eight to seven concerts, elimination of the
"family" concerts series and the free summer concert, and restructuring
of the seating prices, reducing tickets for some areas, increasing
prices in premium seating.
