Cheung stepping up to Altoona podium
Remember Teresa Cheung?
That's a rhetorical question. How could we forget the tireless Hong Kong native who spent six seasons with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, first as assistant conductor, later as resident conductor, assisting music director Alfred Savia and leading the Philharmonic Chorus and Youth Orchestra?
STORY TOOLS
In addition to leading the ensembles here, she took the chorus to Italy
and England and the youth orchestra to Japan, all the while maintaining
apartments in Evansville and New York City.
Cheung left Evansville three years ago to live in New York and to serve as assistant conductor for the American Symphony Orchestra in Lincoln Center.
She's also assumed duties as conductor for Empire Opera and music director and conductor for the Manhattan College Orchestra.
She recently added a new podium to her collection when she was named 11th music director for the Altoona (Pa.) Symphony Orchestra.
There's even a Tri-State connection. She takes over the position from Nicholas Palmer, who led that orchestra while serving in his current position as artistic director for the Owensboro (Ky.) Symphony Orchestra.
Cheung says she will continue to live in New York, traveling to
Altoona for rehearsals and the orchestra's season of pops and classics
concerts. She'll conduct her first program as the new music director
Aug. 30.
"Please tell the readers that Altoona is only 10 hours away from
Evansville by car," says Cheung. "It would be so great to see them
there."
